What is Elder Mediation

Elder Mediation

We can encounter unique challenges at each stage of life and Elder Mediation offers a valuable platform for intergenerational discussion surrounding these challenges.

What is Elder Mediation?

Elder mediation serves as a forum for families to engage in constructive intergenerational discussions and collaborative decision making.  This cooperative process is private, confidential and entirely voluntary. Specialised mediators facilitate focused conversations addressing the various changes and stresses that often occur throughout the family cycle. Family members are encouraged to express their interests and concerns in an informal and safe setting, including private homes, mediators’ offices and senior living facilities.

In Elder Mediation, a Mediator or co-Mediators who have specific training in intergenerational dynamics and age-related issues, typically involving a large number of participants,

  • supports the elder person and their family (and where appropriate, key people such as a close friend, care providers and healthcare experts),
  • in having important conversations,
  • to address specific issues and concerns,
  • to devise appropriate outcomes, with an emphasis on the quality of life for the elder person and
  • ensuring that the voice of the elder person is heard, while sensitive to the needs of family members.

By it’s nature, Elder Mediation is preventative focused.

Elder Mediation views ageing as a continuing process of development and change. Change can be difficult and challenging, especially when triggered by a fall, an illness or a change in capacity, but the Elder Mediation process places the elder person at the centre of the dialogue so that any decisions that are made are based, not just on the needs of elder person, but also their values and their personal preferences.

Any change can impact on our role, relationships, routine and assumptions including current and future assumptions.

Benefits of Elder Mediation
